AI-enhanced post-16 writing assessment

Over the last ten years, we've assessed almost 3 million pieces of writing as part of our national writing assessments for students aged 5 - 16. We've also worked with a lot of post-16 institutions on their own custom assessments.

Now, for the first time, we are running a national writing assessment for post-16 students, in collaboration with the Sixth Form Colleges Association. It will provide participating colleges with reliable assessment data, reduced workload and personalised feedback.

Here's how it will work.

  • We’ll provide you with a short non-fiction writing prompt on a relevant issue that all students will be able to access.
  • Get your new Year 12 students to respond to the prompt in independent conditions at the start of the new term in autumn 2026. The assessment window will run from Thursday 20 August – Friday 18 September 2026. The responses will need to be handwritten and uploaded to our website by Friday 18 September.
  • This project is designed for all Year 12 students from across the attainment range, regardless of which subjects and qualifications they are taking. However, if you only want to submit a smaller cohort of students, that is also fine.
  • We will use a blend of human and AI judgement to assess the writing. You can choose the level of teacher involvement that best suits your needs. You can read more about how much time it will take to judge here.
  • Once all the work has been submitted and the judging is complete, you will get nationally-standardised writing scores for every student, on the same scale as our 5-16 assessments, and you’ll be able to see how your college performed compared to others. You will also get personalised feedback for every student, and an examiner’s report highlighting common strengths, weaknesses, and recommended next steps for teaching.
  • Participation costs £250 for one college, which includes all of the assessments and feedback reports for as many Year 12 students as you want.
  • You can register for the project right away by setting up a free account on our website and then subscribing to the project called Post-16.
  • If you want to learn more, you can take part in our 30-minute information webinar on either Wednesday 3rd June or Monday 8th June at 4pm.
  • You can email us at support@nomoremarking.com with any questions.
