Assessing America's Writing - Results
The introduction of the AI judging for schools taking part in Assessing America's Writing means that schools can access new reports for their students and their teachers. Below we provide a summary of the reports and the results that you can access.
AAW results on a new scale
From the 2025-2026 school year, we have placed the AAW results on a new score scale. This is to align the scores from our American assessment with those of the UK and Australia. The scores scale will now go from roughly 350 up to 750. We will be using this new scale moving forward from the Fall tasks to the Winter and Spring tasks. All the grades, from 1 to 12, will be on the same scale so that you can make comparisons between grades.
This new scale will be divided into six different levels:
Score Range | Category |
|---|---|
Below 400 | Emergent |
400 to 449 | Beginning |
450 to 499 | Developing |
500 to 549 | Progressing |
550 to 599 | Competent |
600 and above | Proficient |
These levels will be applied for these score ranges in all our AAW assessments so that you can see student progression through the levels as they progress through the year and through grades.
To make these levels more meaningful, we have generated descriptions of these levels in terms of characteristics of students' writing and recommended instructional approaches . These descriptions have been generated using AI and sampling the actual writing done by students at each level in a given assessment. A description document has been generated covering Grades 1 to 12. You can access this by going to the Download National assessment documents section of your AAW task.
In addition to the new scale and levels, we are also now able to provide feedback reports targeted at teachers and students. The help article about accessing these reports is available here.
* Warning and an apology *
Because of the new scale, the progress graphs in the teacher reports will look odd as they will match up to previous assessments on the old scale if students have taken part in these previous assessments. We will try and find a solution to this but for now, please ignore the progress back to the old scale.
